Tyre sealant for 4x4s, vans, motorhomes and caravans

Tyre sealant for 4x4s, vans, motorhomes and caravans

OKO 4x4 & Van seals tread punctures up to 5mm in tubeless tyres on vehicles under 5 tonnes. Which tyres, rims and TPMS it suits, doses and fitting.

OKO Original 4x4 & Van is a preventive sealant for road-going vehicles under 5 tonnes: 4x4s, vans, pickups, motorhomes, caravans and trailers. It seals multiple tread punctures up to 5mm as you drive, so you keep going instead of changing a wheel at the roadside. It is for tubeless tyres only, and is not recommended for tyres of 40-profile or lower, high speed ratings, chrome-plated rims or standard passenger cars.

Which vehicles it is for

  • Vans and light commercial vehicles under 5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, including delivery and service fleets
  • 4x4s and SUVs used on paved roads, fitted with high-profile on/off-road tyres
  • Pickups, utility vehicles and dropside trucks
  • Motorhomes, RVs and caravans
  • Horse trailers, boat trailers, plant trailers and mobile home trailers

Heavier than about 5 tonnes? You need a different formula; see tyre sealant for truck and bus fleets.

Check these five things before you fit it

Check OK to use Do not use
Tyre construction Tubeless pneumatic tyres Inner tubes in road-going vehicles
Tyre profile Higher-profile tyres 40-profile or lower
Speed rating Standard ratings High speed ratings
Rims Standard steel and alloy Chrome-plated
TPMS Indirect systems using wheel speed sensors; external sensors Direct systems with valve-mounted sensors and narrow passages

Why the profile and speed limits? Low-profile and high-speed-rated tyres have stiffer sidewalls and tighter tolerances, which can increase the risk of steering vibration or imbalance with sealant fitted. For the same reason, make sure all wheels are professionally balanced before application. More on rims and sensors in does tyre sealant damage rims or TPMS sensors?

What about cars? OKO 4x4 & Van is formulated for heavier on-road vehicles and is not recommended for standard passenger cars.

How much sealant per tyre

Examples from the dosage calculator:

Tyre size Dose per tyre
195/65 R15 250 ml
205/55 R16 300 ml
215/65 R16 300 ml
225/65 R16 350 ml
265/70 R16 450 ml
215/60 R17 300 ml
235/65 R17 350 ml
235/60 R18 350 ml
255/55 R19 400 ml

A van on four 215/65 R16 tyres needs 1.2 litres, which one 1250ml bottle covers. Larger fleets can buy the 25 litre drum. Remember the caravan or trailer axle too: work out each tyre size separately.

How to fit it

  1. Jack up the wheel to take the vehicle's weight off the tyre, with the valve at the 4 or 8 o'clock position.
  2. Remove the valve cap, unscrew the valve core with the remover in the bottle cap, and fully deflate the tyre.
  3. Hold the filling tube tightly on the valve stem and squeeze in the dose. The OKO Cap makes pouring from the 1250ml bottle clean and controlled. For exact amounts, use the OKO 150ml Tyre Sealant Injector.
  4. Blow any residue out of the stem with a compressor, then refit and tighten the valve core.
  5. Inflate to the manufacturer's recommended pressure.
  6. Straight away, rotate the tyre or drive a short distance so the sealant spreads evenly.

Fit it to new or fresh tyres for the longest protection. Full detail in how to put tyre sealant in a tyre.

What you get over the life of the tyre

  • Tyre life extended by at least 20%, by keeping pressure correct and cooling and conditioning the tyre internally.
  • Anti-rust and anti-corrosion additives that are safe for steel and alloy rims.
  • A stable, non-separating formula: no shaking required.
  • Non-hazardous, non-flammable, latex-free and non-allergenic.
  • A freezing point of -16 °C to -24 °C for winter touring.

It is not compatible with direct TPMS that uses valve-mounted sensors with narrow passages. It is generally compatible with indirect systems that use wheel speed sensors.

Can I use it in tyres with inner tubes?

No. OKO 4x4 & Van is for tubeless pneumatic tyres only and is not recommended for inner tubes in road-going vehicles.

Which tyres should I avoid?

Tyres of 40-profile or lower, tyres with high speed ratings, and chrome-plated rims.
