How to put tyre sealant in a tyre: bottle, injector or drum pump

Step-by-step instructions for adding OKO sealant through the valve with the bottle, the 150ml injector or the 25 litre drum pump.

4 min read

You put OKO tyre sealant in through the valve: remove the valve core, inject the measured dose, refit the core, inflate the tyre and then turn the wheel so the sealant spreads. Use the 1250ml bottle with its OKO Cap for single vehicles, the 150ml injector when you need an exact small dose, and the drum pump for 25 litre drums and big tyres. Always start with new or fresh tyres for the longest protection.

Before you start

  • Know your dose. Look up your exact tyre size in the OKO dosage calculator. Doses run from a few hundred millilitres for a van or motorcycle to many litres for a tractor or loader.
  • Check for TPMS. OKO should not go through valve-mounted pressure sensors with narrow air passages. Read does sealant damage rims or TPMS first if your vehicle has them.
  • Light vehicles: for 4x4s and vans, make sure the wheels are professionally balanced, and jack up the wheel to take the vehicle's weight off the tyre.
  • Protect your eyes. Avoid contact with the eyes and keep the product out of children's reach.

Which tool for which pack

Pack Tool Best for
1250ml bottle (Off-Road, 4x4 & Van) OKO Cap: built-in valve core remover and filling tube Vans, 4x4s, trailers and smaller machines
1 litre bottle (On-Road Motorcycle) Cap with valve core remover Motorcycles and scooters
Any bottle or 5 litre can OKO Tyre Sealant Injector 150ml, marked in 5ml steps Exact doses and top-ups on small tyres
25 litre drum Metallic Application Pump for 25L Drums, up to 250ml per stroke Large tyres and fleets: tractors, trucks, loaders

Using the bottle or injector

  1. Position the valve at 4 or 8 o'clock.
  2. Remove the valve core with the remover in the bottle cap or injector, and let the tyre deflate.
  3. Attach the tube and hold it tightly around the valve stem.
  4. Inject the sealant. Squeeze in the dose. If you need it exact, measure it with the OKO injector.
  5. Clear the valve stem by blowing any residue out with a compressor.
  6. Refit the valve core and tighten it.
  7. Inflate to the correct operating pressure.
  8. Rotate the tyre straight away, or drive a short distance, so the sealant spreads evenly inside.

Using the 25 litre drum pump

The pump screws straight into OKO 25 litre drums and works against tyre pressure of up to 60 psi (4.1 bar), so you avoid jacking up the wheel and fully deflating the tyre. If the tyre runs above 60 psi, let it down to that level first.

  1. Fit and prime the pump. Screw it securely into the drum, open the black tap and work the handle slowly until sealant flows through the hose up to the tap.
  2. Set the stroke. Undo the wing nut on the adjustable collar, set it to 50, 100, 150 or 200ml, and tighten the nut. A full stroke delivers up to 250ml.
  3. Position the valve at 4 or 8 o'clock and remove the valve core.
  4. Connect the hose firmly to the valve and pump in the dose.
  5. Close the black tap, unclip the hose and let air blow out of the valve for a few seconds to clear any residue.
  6. Refit the valve core and inflate to the correct pressure.
  7. Rotate the tyre or drive a short distance.
  8. Clean up. Unscrew the pump, replace the drum cap and flush the pump with clean water so sealant does not dry inside.

Mining and large construction machines often have large-bore valves; you will need an adapter to use the drum pump on them. On high-pressure truck tyres, use a tyre inflator to bring the tyre up to working pressure afterwards.

Pouring into a tyre you are fitting

When you are mounting a new tubeless tyre, there is a quicker option. Fit one bead to the rim, pour the measured dose into the open tyre, then mount the second bead and inflate. This works straight from pails and drums, for example with OKO Original Truck & Bus or OKO Original Mining.

After filling

OKO starts working once the tyre is inflated and turning: the rotation spreads it into an even layer around the tread, and from then on it seals tread punctures as you drive. If any liquid is left in the valve, clear it so air can pass freely. For a worked example of tractor doses and how many drum strokes they take, see how much sealant a tractor tyre needs. For large fleets of OTR machines, our mining guide covers normal and severe-service doses.

Quick answers

Do I need to remove the valve core to add sealant?

Yes. Unscrew the valve core first, using the remover built into the OKO Cap, the OKO injector or a standard valve core remover, then put the sealant in through the valve stem.

Can I pump the tyre up with sealant already inside?

Yes. Clear any sealant left in the valve stem so air can flow freely, refit the valve core and inflate to the recommended pressure.

What position should the valve be in?

At 4 or 8 o'clock. At the bottom of the wheel the sealant can block the valve and be hard to inject.

How do I clean the drum pump after use?

Unscrew the pump, put the cap back on the drum and flush the pump with clean water so sealant does not dry inside it.
