Does tyre sealant freeze? Using it in winter

Every OKO formula has its own freezing point, from -8 °C for Off-Road to -30 °C for Truck & Bus. Here is how to choose and store sealant for cold-weather work.

Tyre sealant can freeze, but OKO formulas are made with anti-freeze, and each one has a published freezing point. They range from -8 °C to -12 °C for OKO Original Off-Road down to -25 °C to -30 °C for OKO Original Truck & Bus. If your machines regularly sit in colder conditions than that, lower-freezing versions of the Off-Road, Truck & Bus and Mining formulas are supplied on request.

Freezing points for every OKO formula

These figures come from each product's technical data sheet. They are given as a band rather than a single number.

Formula Built for Freezing point Lower-freezing version
OKO Original Off-Road Tractors, harvesters, loaders, forklifts -8 °C to -12 °C Supplied on request
OKO Original Mining Haul trucks, loaders, heavy plant -15 °C to -19 °C Supplied on request
OKO Original 4x4 & Van 4x4s, vans, motorhomes, caravans -16 °C to -24 °C Not listed
OKO Original On-Road Motorcycle Tubeless motorcycle, scooter and moped tyres -16 °C to -24 °C Not listed
OKO Original Truck & Bus Trucks, buses, coaches, trailers over approx. 5 tonnes -25 °C to -30 °C Supplied on request
OKO Premium Tyre Care Lifelong (conditioner) Mining, construction and large farm tyres -20 °C to -40 °C Not listed

Because each figure is a band, plan around the warmer end of it. If the coldest nights where your vehicles are parked come close to that figure, talk to us before you fit.

Which formula for cold-weather work?

Farms and contractors

OKO Original Off-Road has the highest freezing point in the range, at -8 °C to -12 °C. For most tractors, loaders and trailers it is still the right formula, because it is the one built for slow-moving off-road machines and seals punctures up to 12mm. If your yard regularly sees frosts harder than that, ask for the lower-freezing version rather than switching to a road formula.

Truck, bus and coach fleets

OKO Original Truck & Bus has the lowest freezing point of the sealants, at -25 °C to -30 °C, with colder versions on request. Fleets running through hard winters are already well covered. See our guide to cutting puncture downtime in truck and bus fleets.

Mines and quarries

OKO Original Mining freezes at -15 °C to -19 °C, and lower-freezing versions are available on request for colder sites. OKO Premium Tyre Care Lifelong, the conditioner often used alongside it on the largest tyres, has the widest band of all: -20 °C to -40 °C.

Motorcyclists and 4x4, van and motorhome owners

Both road formulas freeze at -16 °C to -24 °C. OKO's guidance for the On-Road Motorcycle formula is that it will not freeze in normal winter conditions, so it stays liquid and keeps working through the cold. The 4x4 & Van formula shares the same freezing point.

Storing sealant over winter

How you store the drum or bottle matters as much as what is in the tyre.

  • Store containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Lifelong should be stored indoors.
  • Keep closures on containers when they are not in use.
  • The 4x4 & Van, On-Road Motorcycle and Truck & Bus formulas are stable and non-separating, so no shaking is needed before use.
  • After using the drum pump, flush it with clean water so sealant does not dry inside it.

Once it is in the tyre

Inside the mostly sealed environment of the tyre, OKO stays liquid for the tyre's (extended) life. As soon as the wheel turns, centrifugal force spreads it across the tread, and it works whenever the vehicle is moving. Fitting in winter follows the same steps as any other time of year; our guide on how to put sealant in a tyre covers the bottle, injector and drum pump. For questions about how long a fill lasts, read how long tyre sealant lasts in a tyre.

The amount you need does not change with the season. Use the dosage calculator to get the right dose for your tyre size and formula.
